All About the Mayo Clinic
The Mayo Clinic, a nonprofit hospital system with campuses in Jacksonville, Florida, Rochester, Minnesota, Phoenix, and Scottsdale, Arizona, originated with William Worrall Mayo, MD, an English immigrant, in 1846.
Living in many locations within the Minnesota Territory, Mayo, a surgeon for the Union Army, finally settled in Rochester. In 1864, he opened his private medical practice with a tagline, “all calls answered by day or night.”
Mayo’s sons, Charles and William, known as Dr. Charlie and Dr. Will, joined their father’s practice.
In 1883, a violent tornado hit Rochester, leaving a third of the town destroyed. While tending to the survivors, Mayo quickly discovered he needed assistance and reached out to Mother Alfred Moes of the Sisters of Saint Francis of Rochester, Minnesota, a teaching order.
Following the disastrous tornado, Mother Alfred proposed to Mayo that the Sisters of Saint Francis would raise money to build a hospital - as long as he and his sons would supply surgical and medical care.
In September 1889, St. Mary’s Hospital opened in Rochester, Minnesota, with the Mayo men as attending surgeons and physicians.
The Mayo Clinic: From Minnesota to Arizona
Charles and William and their wives, in the 1930s, traded the treacherous Minnesota winters for mild weather and sunshine in Arizona.
Years later, the Mayo's adoration for Arizona led to the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, which opened its doors in 1987, set on 180 acres of land at the base of the magnificent McDowell Mountains.
The Mayo Clinic: Campuses
The two Arizona Mayo Clinics serve different purposes.
Phoenix Campus
The larger Phoenix campus just off 101 and 56th Street includes the Mayo Clinic Hospital, Mayo Clinic Specialty Building, and Mayo Clinic Building.
The Phoenix campus is home to Mayo’s cancer center and the proton beam therapy facility. Proton therapy is an aggressive radiation therapy that uses high-energy beams to target tumors more accurately than x-ray radiation.
The Phoenix campus includes the Multidisciplinary Simulation Center, Franke Education Center, and the medical library.
Scottsdale Campus
The Scottsdale campus provides pharmacy services, diagnostic testing, imaging, laboratory space, and outpatient surgery. This campus is also home to the top 15-ranked Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, formerly known as Mayo Medical School, which provides attending students access to researched-focus study and a diverse patient population.

The Mayo Clinic is a top hospital that provides superior outcomes in coronary interventional procedures, bypass surgery, heart failure treatment, heart valve surgery, and heart attack treatment.

The Mayo Clinic: Future
Currently, the Phoenix campus is doubling its size to increase patient care, research, and education.
The $750 million investment will add over 2,000 employees and will result in Mayo becoming a hub of biomedical science and technology innovation and biomedical science.
Despite not undergoing expansion, the Scottsdale campus is poised to see growth in its medical school.
