Best Cities to Buy Arizona Horse Property

There are several amazing places to find your dream horse property in Arizona, but Maricopa County is easily the most popular for those who enjoy great horseback trails with mild winters. Oftentimes, prospective residents are amazed at the variety of cities in the area that feature horse properties, including North Phoenix and North Scottsdale!

In this section, we will provide information about the best cities, areas, and suburbs in Arizona to buy a horse property. 

North Scottsdale

Although Scottsdale is well-known as an upbeat city with a bustling downtown area, things slow down once you travel north of the 101. McDowell Mountain not only provides a scenic backdrop of the breathtaking desert vistas, it is also a great place for horseback riding, offering staging areas at several of the preserve's trailheads.

In addition to the great horseback riding options, North Scottsdale also features some of the state's best golf courses, luxury resorts, and plenty of great shopping and dining. The homes for sale on North Scottsdale's horse properties range from luxury semi-custom homes in gated communities, to expansive ranch homes on huge acre-plus lots.

Rio Verde, AZ

Located just east of North Scottsdale, Rio Verde is a small master-planned community with a population of approximately 2000. Residents of Rio Verde enjoy access to the northeastern section of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, and the area has plenty of rugged terrain for equestrians to explore.

Although there are no individual horse properties in Rio Verde, they do offer a community horse facility with stables. Other perks provided to Rio Verde residents include an 18-hole golf course located in a private country club, along with a fitness center, library, and Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Fort McDowell, AZ

This small community is nestled a few miles southeast of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation. Primarily a residential community, Fort McDowell residents are just a short drive from the shopping and dining located in nearby Fountain Hills. Fort McDowell is also home to a popular casino, We-Ko-Pa Golf Club, and its own Rodeo Grounds.

The majority of horse properties and lots for sale in Fort McDowell are located near Highway 87 in the beautiful community of Goldfield Ranch. Homes in this area feature Southwest Ranch-style builds, expansive floorplans, and refreshing backyard pools in select units.

Apache Junction, AZ

Located east of Mesa, near Highway 60, Apache Junction is a small city with approximately 41,000 people. With incredible views of the Superstition Mountains, there are a variety of scenic trails near Apache Junction, including the trails offered by OK Corral. The city also provides plenty of great shopping centers, local and national chain restaurants, and easy access to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.

Great views and a peaceful environment makes Apache Junction a great place to own a horse property. Another great feature of this beautiful community is the wide range of price points; from simple single family homes to luxury estates on large lots, AJ has a horse property for every budget!

San Tan Valley/Queen Creek, AZ

These East Valley suburbs sit side-by-side, and they have both grown significantly over the last 5 years. Both Queen Creek and San Tan Valley are within a short drive of the San Tan Mountain Regional Park, and horseback riding is open on their hiking trails! The trails range in length from one mile up to five miles with varying difficulty, and the views from these trails is nothing short of amazing.

Similar to Apache Junction, San Tan Valley and Queen Creek feature horse properties in a wide range of price points. In addition to the great horseback riding trails, both cities feature massive shopping malls, popular golf courses, and plenty of great restaurants.

Mesa, AZ

Several of the horse properties for sale in Mesa are significantly less expensive than the ones in Scottsdale and, making other east valley cities a great place for buyers with smaller budgets. Over the years, Mesa has blossomed into a horse lover paradise, complete with miles of horse trails and parks.

Laveen, AZ

The first of the West Valley towns with beautiful horse properties, Laveen is located just west of the South Mountain area of Phoenix. Laveen's close proximity to the western end of South Mountain provides easy access to a variety of hiking trails where horseback riding is welcome! Notable trails near Laveen include San Juan Trail, Bajada Trail, and the lower section of Ranger Trail.

Horse properties in Laveen range from simple ranch-style homes on ample-sized lots up to spacious estates with beautiful backyard pools and spacious stables. Some of the other great features of Laveen include easy access to the new extension of the Loop 202, one of the best city of Phoenix golf courses, and a variety of great shopping and dining.

Goodyear, AZ

For two decades, Goodyear has become one of the fastest-growing cities in the Valley, yet still small enough to provide plenty of space for horse properties. One of the best reasons why Goodyear is great for horses is the close proximity to Estrella Mountain Regional Park. With over 30 miles of trails perfect for horseback riding, with varying degrees of difficulty. 

Horse properties aren't as common in Goodyear as other West Valley towns, but the ones you do find are absolute gems, with spacious grassy yards and nice-sized homes. The city of Goodyear is close to Interstate 10, the Loop 101, and the Loop 303, which makes it a great place for commuters to call home. Other great amenities in Goodyear include a Spring Training facility, convenient access to nearby Estrella Mountain Community College, and a variety of beautiful golf courses.

Buckeye, AZ

Nestled along Interstate 10, Buckeye is not only the fastest-growing city in the state of Arizona, it was the fastest growing city in the United States through 2019. This growing Valley suburb is home to the South Buckeye Equestrian and Events Center, which offers several portable stables, grass pastures, and a variety of events including a rodeo. If you just enjoy riding, you will be amazed at the wide open areas perfect for trotting with your favorite horses.

Whether you are looking for multiple acres with plenty of space for a custom-built home, or a cozy horse property with a move-in ready home, you can find it in the city of Buckeye. Great shopping, restaurants, golf courses, and convenient access to I-10 are just a few of the reasons why locals love living in Buckeye.

Waddell, AZ

Located north of Litchfield Park, just north of Loop 303, Waddell is a small community with a population of approximately 12,000. The main reason Waddell makes the perfect place to own a horse property is White Tank Mountain Regional Park, which is only a couple miles from the heart of the community. This huge county park offers about 30 miles of horseback riding trails, which range from less than a mile to nearly eight miles! 

Residents of Waddell love the peaceful atmosphere and scenic mountain/desert views. Horse properties for sale in Waddell in feature a variety of different home builds, lot sizes, and horse stables. Although the community is mostly residential, the Loop 303 and Northern Parkway provide easy access to Sun City, Glendale, and Interstate 10.

Surprise, AZ

The peaceful West Valley suburb of Surprise is sandwiched in between the Loop 303 and Highway 60. The city is still relatively close to White Tank Mountain Regional Park (less than a 20-minute drive), and there is still plenty of undeveloped land to explore on the outskirts of town. Surprise is also home to the New Beginnings Paso Fino Horse Rescue, which provides a safe haven for horses before they can be adopted.

Those looking for an affordable horse property near many of the Valley's most popular suburbs will easily find one in Surprise. Although the heart of the city has grown exponentially since the early 90s, there are still plenty of homes near the outskirts of town, which provide the peaceful, quiet atmosphere many horse lovers enjoy.

North Phoenix, AZ

Similar to Scottsdale, once you reach the other side of the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve via Interstate-17, you will notice a rapid change in pace. This area of North Phoenix is a popular area for horse owners to call home, mostly due to its close proximity to several incredible horseback trails. Popular trails in the area include the Dixie Mountain Loop and the Apache Wash Trailhead.

Newer custom homes with spacious lots can be found throughout the North Phoenix area, as well as some older, renovated homes. Convenient access to I-17 makes this area appealing to commuters, and there is plenty of shopping, dining, and entertainment within a 20-minute drive.

Glendale, AZ

Glendale is a large west side city in the Phoenix metro area. Glendale is a popular choice of equestrians because of the large lots and pastures available.

Spur Cross Ranch Conservation sits just north of both Cave Creek and Carefree, and is another popular Maricopa County park for equestrians. It may not offer as many trails as the other regional parks on our list, but the quality and scenery is absolutely outstanding!
